Engineering Research and Development

Product Safety Testing
As proscribed in NFPA 790 and 791, MET’s Field Inspectors evaluate Electrical Equipment for Fire, Shock, Mechanical Hazards, Energy Hazards, Chemical Hazards and Radiation Hazards, in accordance with the appropriate UL / ANSI standards.  Additionally, MET is the Nation’s first Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) and is accredited by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA ) to test and certify products (29 CFR Part 1910) for nearly 175 product categories.  Thousands of products bearing the MET product safety label are manufactured around the world and sold at all major retailers.  Product safety services include:

Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Testing

MET is a global leader in electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) regulatory and voluntary testing for commercial, enterprise, automotive, wireless, telecommunications and military manufacturers.  With highly-trained personnel and facilities containing 3, 5, and 10-meter fully anechoic and semi-anechoic chambers, a reverberation chamber, and open area test sites (OATS), MET can test equipment and sites to hundreds of EMC standards or to a custom test plan.  EMC/EMI/RFI services include:

  • Emissions and Immunity / Susceptibility testing
  • Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) and High-Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse (HEMP) Testing

Environmental Simulation Testing

Ensuring the development of reliable and rugged equipment, MET employs dozens of chambers in multiple locations to simulate the harsh conditions caused by mechanical and environmental factors.  Leading avionics, military, telecommunications, meter, and automotive manufacturers utilize MET’s accurate and repeatable computer-controlled systems proving their prototypes and production products.  Environmental simulation services include:

Past Performance

U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA)
MET Labs conducts FDA Medical Device RFID Susceptibility Program testing for top medical device manufacturers. The purpose of this testing is to determine if the device’s RF wireless communication system could be adversely affected by close proximity to other commonplace RF devices. Jointly with FDA and AIM global, MET Labs played an integral part in co-creating the test parameters for the Program.

U.S. Department of Transportation (USDoT)
MET Labs conducts testing and qualification for “Here I Am” (HIA) devices in support of the U.S Department of Transportation’s Connected Vehicle Program. HIA devices communicate the location and speed of one connected vehicle to another. MET’s testing on the wireless devices has helped the U.S. DoT validate procedures, standards, and specifications for Program device qualification

U.S. Navy
MET Labs routinely conducts MIL-STD-461 and MIL-STD-810 testing for all U.S. Military platforms. MET performed MIL-STD 461 Shielding Effectiveness testing on Hydraulics International, Inc.’s 2-ton hydraulic power generator, which is used to check the flight control of the Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey. This project also required Data Item Description (DID) documentation, a form of documentation necessary for most government products.

National Institute of Justice (NIJ)
In addition to being accredited for NIJ Standard 0101.06 for body armor testing, MET Labs also conducted testing to develop a new “Duty Holster Standard for Law Enforcement” standard.  This testing helped to set minimum requirements and testing protocols for holsters used by members of the criminal justice community to prevent the duty handgun from being dislodged due to physical activity or force.
